CHAPTER FOURTEEN

BALDING

HAIRIES

SUCKED violently back through the Forgotten Room’s door, Ivy tumbled across the floor of the Selector’s office and rolled into the shelves holding the gorgeous crowns. They shook and rattled, but thankfully stayed in place. Ivy looked up to find Fyn standing over her. He held her Individualis and the Kallegulous Key and wore a stunned expression.

“Fyn! What are you doing here?” She rubbed her new bruises.

“Really? You’re asking me what I’m doing? I didn’t just come tumbling through the Forgotten Room’s door. How did you get the key?”

“How did you know I’d be here?”

“I didn’t. I just… I had a feeling. Not sure why it is, but sometimes I think of you and… it’s as though, I don’t know.”

“Wait, you think of me?”

“Never mind.”

“And, you didn’t forget me?”

“No. I guess that’s strange, isn’t it? Anyway, I came in here and saw an empty—totally blank—Compass Individualis on the floor and I guessed what had happened. Didn’t want you to be forgotten! Everything about you would have been gone in that whirlwind.”

Ivy bit her lip. “I guess I should be happy it was you and not the Selector. It’s just…” Ivy looked painfully back at the door.

She gasped, realizing that the Celebratease must be wearing thin if Fyn was here.

“We need to get that key back to where it belongs!”

“Wait! But my friend! Rebecca—”

Suddenly the dragons above the Forgotten Room’s door roared to life again. The fire they breathed heated the whole iron gate, which quickly glowed red. As they backed away, Fyn said to Ivy, “I don’t know anyone named Rebecca, but we’ll have to come back later!”

They dashed down the hall and replaced the Kallegulous Key where Ivy had found it. A moment after they exited her room, Ivory Lucky rounded the corner, rubbing her head as if she had a massive headache.

“Scram, kids!” snarled her right side. “You’ll be late for class,” sniffed the left condescendingly.

All that day Ivy fretted about Rebecca. She had the sensation that her friend was safe, but it was extremely disconcerting to see Rebecca’s name erased from rosters. Even her prickly porcupine vanished. Worse, Ivory Lucky hadn’t left her office since the Celebratease, and the Kallegulous Key was further from Ivy than ever.

What am I supposed to do now? she wondered desperately.
